I remember the first time I heard this one, riding in my buddy Bobby’s brother’s convertible to the beach, surely with girls on the mind. Highly catchy, led to something in England called Mungomania, which didn’t catch on in the States even though sideburns did.
I’ve always been a little creeped by the lines:
If her daddy’s rich, buy her a meal
If her daddy’s poor, just do what you feel
Though I suppose that doesn’t have to be skeevy.
Fun fact: The name Mungo Jerry is derived from the names of some felines in TS Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.
BTW You can’t have too much chumbleeb, even in a jug band tune.
