Wow. I don’t know a lot about Steppenwolf, but this is awful. Sounds like Neil Diamond, eventually backed by a more rockin’ band than you’d expect for Neil Diamond.
I agree, except for the awful part. The slow part is pretty sappy, but the fast part weirdly rocks. This is far from a great Steppenwolf song, but there are many. Born to be Wild, of course, and this one:
