  1. A few years ago, I was talking with someone very close to this very sad, tragic and boorish genius. As someone who loved and envied his productions from the Teddy Bears to The Beatles, I told this person that when I was a kid I always wanted to be a sane Phil Spector. “You can’t,” they replied. “There never was a sane Phil Spector!” I still have trouble balancing the troubled murderer with the aching tenderness of some of his compositions, particularly going back to The Teddy Bears’ “Oh Why,” “You Said Goodbye,” “He Doesn’t Need Me Anymore,” and many others in the pre-Wall era which will always remain my favorites despite the man-monster he became. Rest in peace, Phil – you finally deserve some peace – but would your production have had the same incredible edge if you’d been sane?
